Alpha Omicron Pi readies the bases for annual "Strike Out Arthritis" event

Updated: Mar 31, 2022

Alpha Omicron Pi Upsilon Beta is hosting their annual Strike Out Arthritis tournament this Thursday, March 31, 2022 at 6:00 P.M. on the Campus Green. Proceeds will go directly to The Arthritis Foundation, a nonprofit specializing in helping suit the needs of those with the condition.

After forming their partnership in 1967, Alpha Omicron Pi has raised thousands of dollars for the charity via various events ranging from baseball, volleyball, and softball tournaments to their annual “Walk to Cure Arthritis” and “AOII Goes Blue” awareness events.

“Strike Out Arthritis” is one such event.. This event is put on in conjunction with Major League Baseball.

At the MLB level, each team has its own date where a portion of the park's ticket sales goes towards the charity. For the sorority, each chapter is tasked with hosting a sports event centered around the Strike Out theme, meaning that the sport can vary from year to year as well as by chapter.

The Upsilon Beta has picked a wide range of unique sports in past years, including volleypong in 2021 and kickball in 2019. This year, the organization has chosen wiffleball.

``Strike Out to me gives me the opportunity to give back to the people who do not have a lot of resources for their condition.” Upsilon Beta’s President Caroline Mikel stated. “I know someone personally who suffers from Arthritis and they had to have hand surgeries from Arthritis to try and make their everyday life easier. Arthritis needs a cure and I feel like with every dollar we raise for the Arthritis Foundation, We are one step closer to finding it.”

Approximately 24% or 58.5 million US citizens currently struggle with arthritis and that number is expected to continue to grow.
