Lady Lions closed their regular season out strong, winning 3-2 against Texas A&M International and dominating A&M-Kingsville 3-0.
The Lady Lions started off hot against the Dustdevils. Outside hitter Savannah Wharton(14) led the charge, contributing 6 of the team's 24 kills in the first two sets. The defense silenced the Dustdevils attack, keeping them to .000 attack percentage in set 1.
Set 2 would not prove to be as easy for the Lady Lions. Although they squeaked by with a 25-21 win, A&M International outside hitters Mackenzie Catalina(16) and Illna Spasova(23) put the pressure on with their combined 9 of 13 kills. The Lions were forced to dig themself out of a 19-17 deficit with a 8-2 run.
However, the Dustdevils would continue to hit their stride in set 3 and 4, hitting .333 and .517 respectively. Catalina was a standout, doubling her kill total from 7 to 15 in set 3 alone, and racking up 10 more in set 4. The Dustdevils would win sets 3 and 4, 25-17 and 25-13, stunning the UAFS crowd going into match set.
The Lady Lions would come to play in set 5, on the back of Paola Fragelle’s 4 kills. The Dustdevils kept it close, coming within a point at 11-10, but the Lions offense put an end to the comeback soon after.
The regular season closer would not be as close, as the Lions kept the Javelinas at arm’s distance in their sweep. The Lions would take the game with 25-21, 25-18, and 25-17 wins. Chloe Anderson (2) and her game leading 34 blocks helped keep the Javelinas below .200 attack percentage on the day.
The Lady Lions look to continue their success next Tuesday as they host the first round of the Lone Star Conference. They will take on the #10 ranked St. Edward’s University at 6 PM at Stubblefield. The winner will continue on to San Angelo, Texas where they will face UT Tyler in the quarterfinals.
