Since its latest episode was released in February of 2022, fans have been eagerly anticipating the third season of HBO Max’s Euphoria. The psychological drama stars Zendaya as narrator Rue Bennett, a seventeen-year-old high school student who battles an active drug addiction. Other leads of the show include Jacob Elordi, Alexa Demi, and Hunter Schafer.
The second season of Euphoria ended on various cliffhangers, some of which involve Rue having to owe $13,000 to drug lord Laurie (played by Martha Kelly) and the presumptive death of twelve-year-old Ashtray following a home raid by a S.W.A.T. member.
The drama surrounding the show, however, didn’t stop on screen. In April of 2023, it was alleged that actress Barbie Ferreira (who played another lead role as Kat), walked off set due to disagreements with the show’s director, Sam Levinson, in her character’s storyline following the portrayal of Kat in season two. Since then, both Sam and Barbie have reportedly denied these rumors and instead stated that she “actually did not walk off set” and that the “exit was a mutual decision due to difficulties finding a storyline for her character that fit the show’s narrative.”
In July of 2023, it was confirmed by a state coroner that Angus Cloud who plays Fezco or “Fez” passed away at age twenty-five from “an accidental overdose of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and other drugs” following the news of the death of his father just two months prior. Seemingly, Angus and his dad were very bonded, and the hardships he faced succeeding in his father’s passing led him to drug use. The news of Cloud’s death was shocking and devastating to viewers, as he was loved for his charisma and his authentic start in the industry.

Due to these unfortunate events, fans wondered if a third season was even in the works for the show. Though Euphoria was renewed for a third season in February of 2022, the show became increasingly difficult to film because of situations regarding reoccurring cast members.
It was recently reported that Storm Reid who acts as Rue’s sister, Gia, as well as Nika King who portrays their mom will not be returning to the show. Along with them, Ethan, Kat’s ex-boyfriend (played by Austin Abrams) and McKay (played by Algee Smith) will not be a part of the season three cast.
Though Dominic Fike was open about not enjoying his role in season two of Euphoria when his character was first introduced and initially declined screen time in the upcoming season, Variety announced Fike’s return as Elliot on the 19th of February.
Nevertheless, with six cast members gone, it seems as though Levinson has found a way to give the people what they want. With a speculated five-year time jump, a few side characters, including Chloe Cherry as Faye, are reportedly being promoted to the main cast. Along with that, in an attempt at generating excitement surrounding the show, producers have released a list of new cast members that include Grammy winner, Rosalía and actor Kadeem Harrison who previously played Zendaya’s on-screen dad in Disney’s K.C. Undercover.
Even though Euphoria season three has been confirmed, fans have to prolong their excitement. Filming reportedly started in January of this year, which means that the show’s actual release will be sometime in late 2025.
